They/You Need This is a collective project that analyzes historical marketing methods and how they interact with societal and economical trends.
This project takes shape through three separate pieces: The Catalogue, The Process Book, and The Product. The design direction for these pieces is inspired by space-age architecture and Sputnik marketing.
CATALOGUE:
The Catalogue, titled You Need This, analyzes the gadgets and inventions that gained popularity despite their absurdity or ineffectiveness.
This phenomenon is best explored in 4 distinct phases: Atomic Age, Space Age, TV Age and Info Age.The timeline dissects the methods used as well as the motives to create a desire within the items.
PROCESS BOOK:
The Process Book, titled They Need This, is a comprehensive guide to creating advertisements for impractical products.
Inspired by the absurdity of space-age advertisements, this satirical illustrative guide is everything you need to create the next Sham-Wow.
THE PRODUCT:
The Product takes the form of a nuclear-powered Moon Cleaner. Led by the research that was done to create the booklets, the Moon Cleaner is a nod to the marketing methods of the Sputnik age.
The design for the Moon Cleaner is satirical in nature, with promises of star power and unproven statistics. The typography and colours tie both of the booklets together to create a sum of three parts.
