ALIEN SURVIVAL KIT

BRANDING | PRODUCT DESIGN

The Alien Survival Kit is a package full of tools and items that are essential in order to be prepared for an impending invasion!

This idea came to life after extensive research into the marketing methods that have been historically used to sell novelty items (more on this can be seen in the You Need This project). Building off of this research, The Kit was developed.

The concept development was focused on how marketers capitalized on aesthetic trends to sell their products, in this case, the trend being alien and UFO conspiracy theories from the 70s and 80s. There are 5 products included in the package, and each one was created by hand.

THE INSPIRATION:

The Kit draws inspiration from retro science fiction comics, such as Strange Worlds and Space Detective, as well as space-age advertising.

A lot of thought was put into the consistency of the products as well as the packaging. Working with different-sized labels for various different products brought up challenges—type size and graphic elements had to be considered carefully in order for the products to work as a set.

PERIPHERAL AND PROMO:

The Kit itself includes various promotional items to help round out the concept. Each kit comes with a cryptic alien illustration, as well as business cards in case the user ever encounters any strange beings.

A website for the kit was developed, which allowed for the brand to take form in a different perspective. Applying the printed aesthetic to web items allowed the project gain dimension.
